EAST x BBC Writers Mentorship Scheme

Pauline Zheng

Pauline didn't grow up with square eyes -- television and cinema weren't exactly encouraged in the household, which makes what happened next either ironic or inevitable. It was at NYU, after studying business and marketing, that both TV and film got their hooks in. After four years of management consulting while sneaking in acting and short filmmaking classes on the side, something had to give, and she took the plunge into the industry.

A pandemic brought her to London, and a summer at the NFTS Directors' Series made the move stick. She joined The Story Collective before the company officially opened its doors in 2021, crunching numbers and building out the business plan. Over the last three-plus years, she's been working as a Development Executive across scripted drama and, occasionally, comedy. Currently, she contributes to the central TSC slate while working closely with Ben Donald, whose slate spans European and international drama, and Kwame Kwei-Armah, who recently ended his tenure as Artistic Director of the Young Vic to launch his own television slate at TSC.

She's drawn to stories that take genuine creative risks: surprising, emotionally honest, with a strong point of view and the nerve to carry it through. As likely to be found in a cinema or theatre as on a sofa, she's always on the hunt for fresh voices -- the ones with something new to say and an original way of saying it.

Pauline’s mentor is Carissa Hope Lynch.
